At Mākoura College, culture is at the heart of who we are — lived, breathed, and celebrated every day. Our kura is a place where identity, creativity, and connection thrive. From haka to hip-hop, from spoken word to language weeks, every student’s background is acknowledged, valued, and given voice.
Our Kapa Haka and Polygroup are powerful expressions of this pride. These groups bring together some of the most passionate and talented performers you’ll find — young people dedicated to showcasing the beauty and strength of Māori and Pasifika cultures through waiata, haka, dance, and storytelling. From the fierce wero and rich harmonies of our Kapa Haka rōpū, to the graceful siva and dynamic tauʻolunga performed by our Polygroup, our students transport audiences into vibrant cultural worlds.
But these groups are more than just performers — they are whānau. They support one another, uplift their cultures, and build lasting relationships with the wider community. Culture isn’t an add-on here. It’s for everyone. It’s in the way we speak, the way we celebrate, and the way we stand together.
Our students proudly lead events such as Te Whānau Tahi ō Mākoura (our Cultural Heritage Day), and the annual Matariki Community Event, bringing whānau and community together to honour who we are and where we come from. Whether at Fusions or in the school hall, our students shine with pride, purpose, and unity.
Every student and staff member at Mākoura learns and performs our school haka and waiata — living symbols of belonging and shared pride. This is a school where your culture matters. Where your story is celebrated. And where, together, we grow stronger through connection.
