Mākoura College 2025, Summer Sports registrations are now open for ALL year 9's and 10's
Here at Mākoura College, we are committed to fostering a vibrant hapori / community that supports the growth and development of every `akonga / student. At Mākoura College, our focus in hākinakina / sport is on enhancing the performance of individual athletes and teams by nurturing the whole athlete— hence our focus for skill development in year 9 and 10s through our Sports Academy and upskilled coaches that tautoko / support in strengthening their physical, mental, emotional, and team unity characteristics.
Ākonga / students (MSA) are offered personalized one-on-one and (ALL) group training sessions designed to help them reach their full potential within their peers and to elevate the overall performance of our teams. Through close collaboration with specialist coaches, students and teams participate in multiple training sessions each week, both in group settings and individually, to develop their skills, resilience, and team cohesion.
Our goal is to create an environment where every tauira feels inspired to participate, develop their skills, and cultivate lasting friendships.

Mākoura Sports Academy
Sports Academy Pono Class: Students selected for the Sports Academy will take part in our specialised Pono class, which includes four 70-minute sessions per week. These sessions are led by experienced Mākoura College kaiako (teachers) and external kaiako (teachers) who are experts in their fields. The aim of the Pono class is to give students a well-rounded education in what it takes to succeed as an athlete, covering areas such as:
Within the sports industry, there are numerous areas and career opportunities beyond just playing or coaching. Some of these areas include:
Physical conditioning and skill development
Nutrition and health education
Mental resilience and mindset training
Teamwork, leadership, and personal growth
Event Management – planning, organising, and overseeing sports events and competitions.
Refereeing and Officiating – enforcing game rules and ensuring fair play.
Sports Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine – injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Sports Science and Performance Analysis – analysing athlete performance and providing data-driven insights.
Sports Marketing and Sponsorship – promoting sports teams, events, and brands.
Community Sports Development – promoting participation and access to sports at the grassroots level.
This holistic approach, grounded in the principles of te whāre tapa whā, ensures that students are not only enhancing their athletic skills but also deepening their understanding of sport and exploring a variety of sport-related opportunities. At the same time, it fosters the development of essential character traits such as resilience, teamwork, and leadership, contributing to their overall personal growth.
