Mākoura College is celebrating a standout national achievement, with its under-16 boys’ waka ama crew crowned No.1 in Aotearoa in the 250m, six-man waka (Te Ihu class) at the NZ Secondary Schools Championships in Rotorua.
In a powerful performance on the water, the crew claimed gold with a blistering time of 00:58.95, finishing ahead of Lindisfarne College (1:00.11) and TKKM o te Rangi Aniwaniwa (1:00.69). Their dominance didn’t stop there, also recording the fastest qualifying time in the 500m event, signalling strong form across both sprint distances.
However, the competition was cut short due to a severe weather forecast across the upper North Island, with all racing on Thursday and Friday cancelled. While it meant the boys were unable to race for further honours, their earlier performances left no doubt about their standing among the country’s best.
It’s a tough way to finish what was shaping as a remarkable campaign, but the crew can take pride in their achievement. To stand at the top of the podium in Aotearoa, and to set the pace in multiple events, reflects their commitment, teamwork, and determination.
A huge achievement for the team and a moment of pride for the Mākoura College community. Kia manawanui.
