Students at Makoura are encouraged to perform and play the music which they choose and like. There is an emphasis on contemporary music with strong support for Pasifika and Māori. There is a well-resourced Band Room for use at breaks and during school music classes. Itinerant teachers work with groups and individuals in classes and we offer a range of instruments. All students in Year Nine have ten lessons on guitar with a specialist teacher and they all participate in a poly/kapahaka lesson each week.

All students take a Music/Drama introductory course in Year 9. In Year 10 students can choose to take Music as one of their option subjects.

At NCEA level, the following courses are offered:
  • Level One, Two and Three Music
Our students do very well in local competitions. The department hosts visits to the school from professional musicians who come to support us and to work and perform. We take trips to look at tertiary institutions and attend concerts. Our students are encouraged to enter local and national competitions and to promote their own bands and write original material. We run two assessment concerts each year.
