Principal's Message

Makoura College is a school community taking in a full cross section of wider society.  We know that is takes all sorts, that strength lies in diversity, and that individual uniqueness is precious.  We know we can make a difference in the lives of our students and help them make a difference in the world they are growing into.

Young people have the right and the responsibility to aspire to live richly fulfilling lives.  They need a learning environment that is warm, engaging, challenging and inspiring and our motto Kia Manawanui highlights the importance of courage and compassion in the way we live and work together at Makoura College.

We support our students to have courage to live true to themselves, make wise choices, and shape their future with honesty and integrity. Our students learn how compassion helps us better understand other people and supports others to fulfill themselves. We focus on how community means understanding difference, celebrating cultural identity, mana and whakapapa, and caring about relationships and connections.

Our young people talk about the friendly atmosphere.  They say you become close with people here - students and teachers.  They feel it’s more diverse, and that you get along with everyone. They talk about the choices, the opportunities and the chance to select the things that really interest and inspire them.

There is a future on the horizon that’s undoubtedly going to demand a lot of ingenuity.  We need to support students to become multidimensional - able to call upon a spectrum of understandings, skills and perspectives.

Our teachers are dedicated to the mahi of navigation and steering the waka.  They have a deep seated commitment to improving outcomes for our rangitahi.

We would love you to be part of our journey.  Come and live and learn with us.
