UPDATES

23.03.2020

Kia ora Whānau

The Ministry of Education has stated that "schools will be closing and expected to be closed by Wednesday midnight."

We ask that families keep children from school until further notice.  We urge all to stay safe and focus on your health and on that of your family.  Please refer to and follow all directives from the Ministry of Health including social distancing.  Be vigilant with personal hygiene and hand washing.

Out staff have been preparing for this and are committed to working with families to continue teaching.  The primary focus of communication will be through Gmail, Google Classroom and Zoom.

ONLINE LEARNING

Responding to COVID-19: Online Learning

Since the government announcement on 23 March 2020, teachers have been busy planning, preparing and organising learning content for remote learning. In some curriculum areas, teachers have organised learning packs of hard materials and resources. In these cases, you will be contacted and asked to collect these from the college office on Wednesday 24 March from 10.00 am – 12.00 pm.

For the rest of this week, teachers will be establishing connections with as many students as they can, and setting out how remote learning will work.

Plans for remote learning will be in place for the rest of this week which is now the last week of Term 1. School holidays commence from this Saturday 28th March and continue until Tuesday 14th April. Term 2 will begin Wednesday 15 April, but no one will be physically attending school on that date. Remote learning will continue from then.

By in large teachers will be providing lessons via Google Classroom with learning material available online. We do not expect students to be working to the school timetable. It will be up to them when they complete work. If you have questions about your learning, please email your child's teachers or post in Google Classroom. Please remember that teachers will be with their families over this time. They have committed to getting back to you within 48 hours during the school week.

As noted by the Prime Minister these restrictions are our best chance to slow the virus in New Zealand and to save lives. We all have a clear role here to slow the spread of COVID-19. If you haven’t already done so, you may wish to read the information put together by the Ministry of Education. education.govt.nz/school/health-safety-and-wellbeing/pastoral-care-and-wellbeing/talking-to-children-about-covid-19-coronavirus/

This will probably be my last communication for this term. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school in unprecedented circumstances. Hold fast to the vision of Makoura College that of Tika, Pono and Aroha. Most of all, be kind, keep safe, and look after each other over the coming period.
