Makoura students are encouraged to be active!
The College offers a wide range of sporting, cultural and outdoor education experiences.
We have long standing relationships with other colleges for yearly Sport Exchanges and students participate in School Athletics, Swimming and Cross Country. Students who perform at a competitive level in these activities may attend Intercols and Regional events.
Senior school students may go on our annual ski and snowboarding trip, to outdoor pursuits, to senior leadership camps, an Outward Bound course, or a voyage on the Spirit of New Zealand. Students in the Junior school participate in a range of experiences during the end of year Junior Activities Week.
Students may also experience Education Outside the Classroom within their academic learning programme.
We believe students’ personal and social development is enhanced through taking on leadership roles. Opportunities exist via formal leadership roles for Year 12 and 13 students such as Official Student Leaders, through peer support, through the student Hauora Committee; and through representation on the Student Council.
Makoura College has four House Groups. Our houses are Rimu, Matai, Totara and Kauri. Every student is assigned to one group. Friendly competitiveness on Spirit Days and Athletics Day can be seen as students show courage to make their house the best.
