Learning Support

Makoura College is proud to be a fully inclusive school. All of our Learning Support students in the Junior school work full time in mainstream classes. Students are supported in classes to enable them to participate in all areas of school life. Experienced and knowledgeable teacher aides work with students to allow them to find success in all areas of the school from the classroom to Stage Challenge.

We know that every student is different and the size and nature of school means that we have the ability to build programmes which meet the needs of students and their families. We are approachable and flexible and want to do the best for every student. At Makoura we will work with you and your student to develop IEPs which work towards their future academic, social and future goals. We also work closely with agencies to ensure the support our students receive is appropriate and empowering.

As students move into the senior school we are able to build flexible programmes which allow them to build on their skills and interests. Students are supported in subjects which range from Art to Building to Textiles and everything in between. We realise that it’s important to support students as they transition into the next stage of their lives. Our senior students have the option of attending UCOL or Taratahi as well as doing work experience to help them develop real world skills. We have developed good relationships with outside providers such as STARS and IDEA Services to help our students to transition smoothly into the “real world”.

All students take part in wider school classes and activities; Makoura has policies and culture where individuals are valued and ‘a sense of belonging for all’ is treasured. If you would like to discuss your child’s needs and how we can accommodate them please contact Lauren Tauveli via the school office.
